Buchanan, Liberia
YATIA-Africa in partnership with the Young Women Initiative for Transportation and Care for Life observes the International Women's Day to celebrate women who are leading the charge for gender equality and women empowerment in Liberia.
Considerably, this day is celebrated 8th of March every year, thus celebrating and recognizing the roles, impact, and progress women have made within our global community.
This event of each year is preceded by a weeklong observation, which is efficiently called Women’s Week.
International Women's Day celebration colours are purple, green and white. Originated from the Women’s Social and Political Union in the United Kingdom in 1908, purple signifies justice and dignity, green signifies hope, while white symbolizes purity.
Women’s week is based on five major elements that seek to entrust women in every way possible, as well as the building of relationships, self-knowledge, healthy self-image, leadership development, sexual assault, and interpersonal violence.
Meanwhile, these five factors are integral to Women’s lives and the development of a global scenario that simplifies women’s well-being and equal status in society, as enshrined in the UN Sustainable Development Goal #3 (Gender Equality).
The celebration in Buchanan, Liberia was organized by the Young Women Initiative for Transportation, Youth Against Tribalism in Africa and Care for Life, with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The theme of International Women's Day 2022, as decided by the UN, is "Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow".
Serving as Keynote Speaker of the program, CLR. Charlene Brumskine used the occasion to inspire prominent young women who continue to strive for gender equality and women empowerment in Liberia.
"Arise and stand for a cause, remember the world sees you as a transformer. See yourself as Winfrey Oprah, Mitchell Obama, Antoinette Sayeh, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Jewel Howard Taylor and the list goes".
She added that "These women stood the test, and today they're called great women".
During the program, nine prominent women in Buchanan City, Republic of Liberia were recognized and honoured for their outstanding role in the advocacy for gender equality and women empowerment in our society.
